Today we have the semi-finals. Barty, who has been incredibly consistent this year coming up against Anisimova, who dispatched the defending champion Halep in straight sets yesterday.
The other match sees Konta, who has hit top form at the perfect time, battle it out against Vondrousova, another teen and a future star in the opinion of many.
Some people think there will be shocks and we could see and all-teen final.
I wanted to go back and see how the favourites have fared in the semi-final matches here in previous years.
Going back to 2007, that’s a total of 12 years, and 24 semi-final matches to look at.
In those 24 matches, the underdog has won seven times.
2007 – Ivanovic bt Sharapova
2008 – Safina bt Kuznetsova
2010 – Schiavone bt Dementieva (ret.)
2011 – Na Li bt Sharapova
2012 – Errani bt Stosur
2015 – Safarova bt Ivanovic
2017 – Ostapenko bt Bacsinszky
From those seven players, three went on to win the title as an underdog in the final; Ostapenko, Na Li (odds about level, not a big underdog), and Schiavone.
For today’s matches, the underdogs are Anisimova and Vondrousova.
We haven’t seen both underdogs win the semi-finals in the same year before. Will we today?
