Marketa has come upon the WTA scene during my last break from following the tour. I heard her name mentioned in recent weeks and I’m currently watching her lead Martic 7-6 *5-3 in the French Open QF.
Looking at 2019 to start with, Vondrousova is currently 26-6 and sitting at #38, having started the year at #72. After losing to Petra Martic in AO she reached the final indoors at Budapest.
She rocked up at Indian Wells at #61, losing to Svitolina in the QF which is a great achievement, beating Kasatkina and Halep on the way.
The QF in Miami was also reached, with Pliskova ending the run in the sun this time. Martic once again was the enemy who defeated her as she reached the final in Istanbul. An in-form Konta beat her in Rome, once again in the QF.
Ranking of #38
This gave her the #38 ranking as she arrived at Roland Garros for the French Open. Young, in-form and fearless, with two wins over Halep this year to keep the confidence high.
Vondrousova has had four straight-set wins at RG so far, including a cracking 6-2 6-0 win over Sevastova in the last round.
She’s just battle past Martic (who she was 0-4 against) to reach the SF. That was a great match. Both played some cracking tennis, great drop shots, served well and some long rallies.
Martic missed a few when going for winners and it was enough for Vondrousova to take the win. Congratulations.
